Concert for Dad
I had reserved today to perform a concert for Dad since April. Because
I didn't want to spend too much time planning and preparing the food,
I made it a potluck dinner.
Amanda was the first to arrive with her famous organic, home-grown rhubarb
and raspberry crumble. Her nextdoor neighbour Nalen brought his wife Deidre's
couscous salad. Mezzo soprano Margaret and her friend Pierce brought luxury
quiche from Tesco's. Robert brought old Amsterdam cheese from Schiphol
Airport. As the sun started to set, Nicola arrived with tales from Italy.
After wine, cheese, and dinner outdoors, we moved inside for the concert.
I began it with my own composition (as usual) - Winter
in July.
Father was impressed with Margaret's singing. Accompanied by guitarist
Robert Bekkers,
she sightread some old Spanish songs.
We took turns - I accompanied Margaret. Robert played solo. And finally,
Robert and I played the first movement of Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman.
It was a short concert. But it was enough to give Dad a flavour of a
midsummer night's dream.
