| Bon JournalGordon Beal: The temptation of LondonSuch a contrast the international city of London is to the little Dutch village of Bussum where I had hidden myself for three weeks. There is so much to do in London that you have to plan ahead just to make sure you have the time to do it. At the same time, there is no need to plan, because there is always something going on. My friend Gordon Beal has a mailing list of 1,700 (on last count) of Londoners who enjoy going to cultural events. Half of them are British who enjoy foreign things, and the other half are non-British (mostly singles) who are also equally disposed. He personally selects and writes about the events. Usually they are free. Some are first come, first served. I can hardly read his e-mails without being led into temptation. The events range from classical concerts to private viewings of art exhibitions, theatre shows, dances, culinary indulgences, and disco trips down the River Thames. I've told him several times that he can make money doing this. Yet he does this for the love of it. He enjoys meeting people. He enjoys introducing people. And most of all, he enjoys going to these events. I wonder if there's a Gordon Beal in Holland. It makes things so much easier if someone could preselect what is interesting to spend my time on. Gordon even gets everyone to meet at a tube station fifteen minutes before the chosen event so that no one gets lost. The best things in life are free ---- if you are on Gordon Beal's mailing list! 27 October 2003 Monday |
