Bon JournalWedding party in EdeWould someone please translate the Dutch letter to my right? This was the wedding party of Maria and Jac in Ede, about two hours drive east of Amsterdam. Their wedding took place in a 17th century castle in Bennekom, accompanied by Duo Magenta , the famous Dutch violin and guitar duo of Mira Roos and Robert Bekkers. Immediately afterwards close friends and family members drove to a conference centre in Ede where the wedding reception took place. I spotted a Yamaha grand aching to be played. Before most guests had arrived, I already started playing continuously. Later the buffet was served. I continued to play. Then the gamalan orchestra arrived. It took awhile to set up. When done, it seemed as if we had transported the musicians all the way from Indonesia. The long pentatonic music served as an aphrodisiac for the newly weds. Soon followed four hours of acts - like a talent show of song, dance, skits. I've never seen anything like it. Through such a multi-dimensional and multi-media show, I learned how the bride and groom met. I laughed along with the other guests. A young singer by the name of Serina with her velvet voice sang "Killing Me Softly with His Song." The Dutch guitarist accompanied her on Anouk's "Sacrifice." An opera singer sang. A young girl did a belly dance. An older man smiled and stood behind me as I played old tunes with the guitarist. "Besame Mucho", "The Girl from Ipanema", "Summertime", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "Fascinating Rhythm", etc. He exclaimed, "You're playing all the songs I grew up with. I feel so young!" It was 1:30 am before the last guests were ready to leave. Finally, I packed my music books. It was time for me to stop playing. 25 October 2002 Friday |
