EARTHQUAKE IN INDIAAnne, you asked me about Taiwan tremor casualties in 1999 as compared with India's. Well, the 1999 tremor in central Taiwan caused some 2,000 deaths and over 10,000 injuries while tens of thousands of homeless today still live in shacks, shanties, tin quarters. many on welfare. One little girl lost all her immediate family members, and is now adopted by her aunt. Some people were rescued after having been buries in debris for several days. They relied on little water in their icebox for survival. But India, Pakistan and El Salvador suffer more heavily because they are developing countries. If it is true, as media reported, that India and Pakistan held nuclear tests in area nor far from fault region where tremor occurred, that should be a severe warning about how human error can trigger off natural woes.
