THE WINTER GARDENThe Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky faces the famous DAM in the centre of Amsterdam, about a 10 minute tram ride from the Central Station. What it is most famous for, I suppose, is the Winter Garden, which is a national monument. The Winter Garden is nothing more than a huge conservatory - or greenhouse, as they call it in the US. The glass ceilings are very high. Mirrors on one side serve to enlarge it further. Even on a dull morning like this, I can see the sky. Once upon a time, it might have been the venue for a Christmas ball or some other grand event. Nowadays, the hotel only serves buffet breakfast or lunch. The first morning I overslept. The second morning I had a meeting to attend at 8:30 am. Today I requested for a 7 am wake-up call just so that I could make it for a champagne buffet breakfast. Had I not stayed here, I would have never have known about this place. Indeed, now I must have breakfast in the Winter Garden everytime I visit Amsterdam. |
